Willie Ruff comes to St. Louis

On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, Willie RuffProfessor Willie Ruff of Yale University will be coming to St. Louis to present his exciting research on the similarities between Scottish congregational singing to that of African-American congregations of the Deep South.  You will see and hear film footage from his upcoming documentary.

Artists-in-Residence

Beginning on Monday, September 29, 2008, SPAE presented two weeks of artists-in-residencies at 12 St. Louis area schools and 2 local children's choirs.  Brian McNeill and Sara Cull presented workshops in traditional Scottish Fiddle music.  Ed Miller and Caroline Pugh presented workshops in traditional Scottish Folk music.  These workshops culminated in a student concert on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Gateway Middle School, 1200 N. Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63106 at 2 PM.

While they were in town, our artists also presented concerts at the Focal Point, 2720 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood, MO 63143.  On Saturday, October 4, 2008, Ed Miller and Caroline Pugh were in concert at 8 PM.  On Saturday, October 11, 2008, Brian McNeill and Sara Cull were in concert at 8 PM.

Jim Malcolm

On Saturday, September 6, 2008 Jim Malcolm performed a concert at the Focal Point.  $2,400 was donated to the Burns Statue Restoration Project.  This statue (on the corner of Skinker and Forsythe on the campus of Washington University) is one of only eight Burns Statues in the USA and will be restored in time for the 250th Anniversary of Burns birth on January 25, 2009. 

Jim Malcolm, raised in Pethshire and Angus in Scotland, is recorded on Greentrax, Linn Records, and Beltane Records and has appeared on Scottish radio and television broadcasts and at all of the major folk festivals in Scotland. He has toured extensively in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Denmark and Ireland both as a solo artist and with Old Blind Dogs.The Scots Traditional Music Society awarded him the Songwriter of the Year Award in 2004, the same year they awarded Old Blind Dogs (who will be in concert at the Focal Point on Friday, September 26th) the Scottish Folk Band of the Year Award—Jim was still the lead singer at that time. www.jimmalcolm.com

 

Gordon McCann

On Tuesday, April 15, 2008, Gordon McCann, 2002 Missouri Arts Council Leadership in the Arts Award Winner,  presented H.K. Silvey, Ozark fiddler and Justin David, songwriter, singer and Ozark fiddler in a Teacher Professional Development Workshop.
